Amazing Places to Visit in Armenia

In recent years, Armenia has become an increasingly popular destination as its tourist numbers are on the rise. It is not very difficult to see why as the country is blessed with sparkling lakes, mountainous landscapes with deep gorges and gushing rivers. Everywhere you turn, the scenery is just breathtaking and there is a lot of hiking to be done. As it has a strategic location in the Caucasus, everyone from the Persians and Byzantines to the Soviets and Romans have passed through the area. Throughout all this time, Armenia has managed to retain its rich heritage, culture and language.
Since it was the first nation to accept Christianity, you will find a plethora of incredible chapels, churches and monasteries to explore and they can be found in the most scenic places imaginable. Suffice it to say, Armenia seems to have it all, but where should you go first? Here are some of the amazing places to visit in Armenia:

Yerevan

The capital and the greatest city in Armenia, Yerevan is an excellent place to start exploring the country. It is a very historic city and you need to visit the Armenian Genocide Memorial to learn about the troubled past of the nation. Take a walk through the Hrazdan gorge or visit the Vernissage flea market. Yerevan is also called the City of Cafes and is home to the only mosque in the country i.e. the Blue Mosque. You can also find one of the most unusual attractions in Europe, Levon’s Amazing Underground World, in Yerevan.

Shikahogh State Reserve

This is Armenia’s second-largest reserve and it is so unspoiled that some major parts of it are still unexplored to this day. The forest is said to be home to different animals, which include bears, vipers, wild goats, and leopards. It is also believed that there are almost 1,100 species of plants in the Shikahogh State Reserve, but the fauna hasn’t been explored fully. In 2005, a planned highway threatened the reserve, but the forest’s future was protected through successful lobbying by environmentalists. There are also a number of beautiful waterfalls that can also be enjoyed.

Lake Sevan

Found in the heart of Armenia, Lake Sevan is the largest lake in the country and is certainly a beautiful place to visit. There are some stunning monasteries that surround the lake, the most impressive is undoubtedly the Sevanavank Monastery that serves as a glorious scenic backdrop. One of the top recreational activities at the lake is none other than windsurfing and you can also find a great choice of seafood restaurants situated along the shore. There are a number of popular beaches and the lack of coastline means it is the best place to sunbathe in Armenia. You can enjoy spectacular scenery thanks to Sevan Bay and the mountains surrounding it.
